Goal
Use a WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) tool to break up clumps and create even distribution before tamping.
What you need
- A WDT tool (fine needles, 0.3–0.4mm ideal)
- Your portafilter with ground coffee
Steps
- After grinding into the portafilter, insert the WDT needles into the grounds.
- Stir gently in circular motions, reaching all areas including edges.
- Flatten the surface with a few passes near the top.
- Tap the portafilter gently to settle, then tamp.
Why this works
Clumps create uneven density. Water takes the path of least resistance, flowing through looser areas (channels) while under-extracting dense spots. WDT creates uniform density throughout the puck.
Signs of improvement
- More even extraction (no spurts or blonde spots early)
- Better shot consistency from one pull to the next
- Reduced channeling visible on the bottomless portafilter
Tips
- Don't be too aggressive—you're distributing, not excavating.
- Clean your WDT tool occasionally to prevent buildup.
